Three Cups of Tea

I just finished reading the book Three Cups of Tea – One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace … One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. A touching book to say the least, it was particularly special to have read while geographically located close to where the story is set.

The book is basically about promoting peace through education and is required reading for many organizations, including all special-forces deploying to Afghanistan. Although my purpose may seem at the surface contradictory to Mortenson’s mission, I can testify to the significance of education as it pertains to peace. I cannot count the times that I have said or heard the statement, “they do this or they are like this because they don’t know better.”

I think part of Mortenson’s success in Pakistan and Afghanistan is that he is not trying to change them into being a different people. He does not try to force them out of their culture, or make them into Christians, or tell them that they are doing it wrong. He simply presents the option to build schools and promotes equal opportunity to pursue education. There are some enlightening media articles out there if you are interested. Check it out:
